“What do you mean she checked out?” Peter asked the receptionist at the hospital’s information desk.

“The computer shows that Melissa Hunt checked out early this morning,” was her reply.

“She was supposed to be here for at least a couple more days, your computer must be wrong.”

“I seriously doubt that, Sir. But I can check with her doctor if you would wait a moment.” Peter and Maria were waved to a set of chairs by the imposing woman behind the desk, who grabbed a phone and started dialing.

Angry at the screw up, Peter led Maria over to a couple of empty seats, and fell into one.

The couple had called the night before to see if Melissa had woken yet. Her doctor told them that she had, but that it would be better for them to wait until morning before coming to see her, so here they were. “She’s here, probably getting the wrong leg cut off or something,” Peter mumbled.

“What do you mean, wrong leg?” Maria asked with alarm.

“Just kidding. They just screwed up her paperwork, that’s all.”

“Don’t scare me like that.”

Peter was a worried about Maria. She had spent a long time in the bathroom this morning, dealing with her nausea, and had taken on a rather delicate temperament. The slightest thing had her looking around in a vague panic. Peter didn’t know if it was due to the pregnancy, or a result of her time with Cynthia.

He saw the receptionist waving him over, so he got up and went to see what she had to say for herself.

“Doctor Carlson wants to see you. He asked me to tell you to meet him at desk 27 in ten minutes.”

“Did he say why? Melissa Hunt is here, isn’t she?”

“Not according to my computer, she isn’t. The doctor will talk to you himself. Desk 27. Second floor, east wing.”

Dismissed, Peter took Maria’s hand and they went up to see Maria’s former, and hopefully Melissa’s current doctor.

The man kept them waiting a few minutes, but when he did show, his first question was how Maria was feeling.

Maria said she felt fine, but Peter wasn’t too sure. She didn’t move quickly and rarely sat down. Peter thought she was in more pain than she let on. He knew she was reluctant to take the drugs the hospital had given her, despite their reassurances that it was safe for the baby. He might have to take charge of that later. But for now, there was another problem.

“Melissa,” he said to the doctor.

The doctor’s face fell. “Against my wishes, she checked out this morning about two hours ago. She could barely walk, but she was adamant about her not staying here.”

“Why did you let her go?” Peter asked.

“None of her injuries were life threatening. She was in a lot of pain, but that isn’t an excuse to hold her here.”

“You should have called us,” Maria said softly.

“She told me not to. She was very specific about that. But she did give me this to give to you.
